Hey digger, Im not 100% sure. But i think what your looking at is where the disk goes for the braking system, I dont think the brakes go at each wheel, but instead its one disk right there where you think the drive shaft hooks up to. But I might be wrong.

THOSE ARE ROCKWELL 2 1/2 TON AXLES AND THEY HAVE A DRIVESHAFT FLANGES ON BOTH ENDS OF THE AXLES ONE OUT THE FRONT AND ONE OUT THE REAR . THE REASON THEY DID THAT IS BECAUSE THEY CAME OUT OF A 6 WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK AND THE THIRD MEMBERS ARE ALL INTERCHANGABLE SO THERE ARE LESS PARTS THE MILITARY HAS TO CARRY WITH THEM . THEY COME WITH DRUM BRAKES AT ALL CORNERS BUT YOU ARE RIGHT I AM GOING TO INSTALL AFTERMARKET PINION BRAKES FRONT AND REAR .
